Modern GNU/Linux systems often need a bit of extra help finding their root file system during bootup. This is mostly a solved problem, but if you're the DIY type of person you may want to take a peek behind the scenes and possibly solve it yourself anyway.
There used to be a time when configuring audio hardware was a complex and time-consuming task. These days it mostly just works. Mostly. Here I will try to describe a few things that I've learnt about my sound card and about how to configure it properly.
We have been running an installation of the Gerrit code review software for a while, using GitHub OAUTH to authenticate our users. However, having a third party in control of who can use your infrastructure and letting them decide how we are allowed to authenticate has been bugging me. So it was time to take things into our own hands and we decided to use HTTP client certificates for authentication instead.
Do you remember DVDs? Little plastic discs that are always in the wrong case, containing amazingly detailed versions of your favourite movies? Today we are going to figure out how to convert your old movies and burn them to a DVD in order to watch them on an ordinary standalone DVD player.

However, in most computers the BIOS is a closed-source, potentially buggy blob that sometimes deliberately gets in the way of you, the computer's user and owner. Coreboot allows us to fix that.
Installing the free Rockbox firmware on an iPod is very easy, the graphical installer can do that with just a few clicks. It does however require a working disk in the iPod and the disk must have initially been setup using iTunes. Today we are going to look into how to install Rockbox 'by hand' on a fresh disk, without using any proprietary software whatsoever.
Die «Wireless Router Application Platform» (WRAP) war ein sparsamer Kleincomputer, lange bevor das Raspberry Pi und seine Kollegen die Gattung der Kleincomputer salonfähig machten. Für die meisten heutigen Aufgaben ist das System deutlich zu langsam, mit der richtigen Software kann es seiner ursprünglichen Berufung als WLAN-Router aber weiterhin gerecht werden.
Der Primotecq BB 508 ist ein «Mini-Brotbäcker» von Fust, den ich vor Jahren geschenkt bekommen habe und der mich seither regelmässig mit wunderbar würfelförmigen Broten vor dem Hungertod bewahrt. Leider musste ich eines schönen Tages feststellen, dass sich trotz laufendem Motor der Knethaken nicht mehr bewegte – der Zahnriemen war defekt und musste ersetzt werden. Leider handelt es sich dabei um ein modellspezifisches Ersatzteil; da Fust das Gerät nicht selber produziert sondern irgendwo in Asien eingekauft und umbenannt hat, galt es, den ursprünglichen Hersteller ausfindig zu machen.
Das Anschliessen von Lautsprechern ist an sich keine Kunst: Rotes Kabel an rote Buchse, schwarzes Kabel an schwarze Buchse, so lange wiederholen bis alle Buchsen belegt sind. Wenn es trotzdem einmal schief gehen sollte, weil beispielsweise bei einem Kabel die beiden Adern nicht gekennzeichnet sind, dann wird der Fehler oft erst später (oder gar nicht) erkannt, die Anlage klingt aber nicht überzeugend und an gewissen Punkten im Raum genau zwischen den Lautsprechern können unangenehme Klangeffekte entstehen. Heute befassen wir uns mit der Frage, wie man solche falsch verkabelten Lautsprecher identifizieren und damit den Klang der Stereoanlage deutlich verbessern kann.
